1. Pre Heat The Grill

Warm the grill to high (approximately 450° Fahrenheit) or until when you hold your hand over the grate for one second you can feel the sear of the heat. If you’re using a charcoal grill arrange your coals so that you have a high and low heat cooking zone.

2. Prepare The Meat

While you wait for your grill to pre heat, prepare your meat. Gently pat ground beef into a log roll that is approximately 2 feet long. Use a clean baking sheet for this step. With your thumb, make a deep grove in the center. Place onions evenly down the grove. Whisk together the following: Worcestershire sauce, soy, and garlic powder. Sprinkle this over the onions in the trough. Add in a few grinds of black pepper over the top.

3. Shape Your Burgers

After you gently pinch the grove closed around the onions and ‘sauce’, take a sharp knife and divide your 2 foot log into 8 sections. Gently using fingers, flatten each section into a patty that is approximately 1 inch thick. Don’t press too hard or overwork your meat. Allow the patty’s to rest at room temperature for about 20 minutes while the grill pre heats.

If you do the burgers ahead of time and refrigerate them, allow them to warm back up to room temperature for about 20 to 30 minutes before you grill them.

4. Grill Your Burgers

Once your grill is ready and your burger patty’s have fully rested and come to room temperature, place your burgers on the grill. Grill them for 2 minutes on each side. Once the burgers are grilled on each side, you’ll want to cook them for another 2 to 3 minutes for medium rare, grill them another 3 to 4 minutes for medium and 5 to 6 minutes for well done. During the last minute of cooking you may lay a slice of cheese atop each burger if you’re seeking a cheeseburger.

5. Assembly Time

When burgers are done place them on your toasted bun. Pile on your favorite toppings and prepare to taste the best juicy burger of your life.

You can change the flavor by trying such things as adding in minced herbs into the grove as well. Consider cheese, kalamata olives, sun dried tomatoes as well as bacon, hot sauce and mushrooms.
